Studies suggest students should be praised for effort over smarts
Studies have shown that praising students for intelligence and good grades, rather than effort, can lead them to focus on the grade rather than the learning process. Designating students as different types of learners also can lead students to believe that working hard means they are not smart, according to research by Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, associate professor of psychology at UC Berkeley. "People have aptitudes that are undeniable," he said. "We can't all be geniuses, but we can all access learning." http://www.smartbrief.com/news/ascd/storyDetails.jsp?issueid=30E24030-6115-4567-8DED-490099AF878D©id=4562A08A-A2A6-4173-A476-D889FB882835&campaign=facebook&ref=facebook4562A08A-A2A6-4173-A476-D889FB882835 What would happen if one of the wealthiest men in the world decided to remake the institution of public education in America? How to support teachers in implementing technology in school Elementary-school computer teacher Mary Beth Hertz in a blog post suggests ways that schools can support teachers in integrating technology into the classroom. Rather than depending on the IT department or a single technology integration specialist, schools should enlist both mentors and coaches -- who serve two distinct roles, Hertz writes. Mentors help colleagues get started with an idea they already have been practicing, while coaches provide regular support on getting started with the specific technology, she explains. http://www.smartbrief.com/news/ascd/storyDetails.jsp?issueid=15A547BD-6416-40ED-9B12-E92A18D5788E©id=40BE0031-C3A7-4BB6-8B5E-D2E57FEA09E1&campaign=facebook&ref=facebook40BE0031-C3A7-4BB6-8B5E-D2E57FEA09E1

Proposal
Objective: Mentor parents and teachers to ensure that every child has a free and proper primary school education.
Organization
St. Carrie’s Center for Human Development (SCCHD) promotes peace and friendship through collaboration and the free exchange of ideas. SCCHD is a 501 (c) 3 registered in 3 states, California, Mississippi and Tennessee since September 2001 to conduct educational research. Conducted successful projects in Italy, Benin, Namibia, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Cuba and Brazil, California, Mississippi and expanding in Tennessee.
Mission statement
St. Carrie’s Classroom Knowledge, Education, Peace (Subsidiary organization)
St. Carrie’s Classroom commits to promoting a free quality education for all children as the only way to ensure a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable society. Education is recognized as a human right which should be accessible to all persons.
Problem: Children in Africa do not have access to a free and proper primary school education due to economics as well as institutional attitudes.
120 Day Goals
1. Provide secondary school scholarships for 8 students at Manda Primary School for 2012 school year.
2. Develop a sustainable project to assist adolescent girls to manage menstruation so they can attend school on a regular basis and remain in school (panty and fabric drive to teach girls how to make personal hygiene products and undergarments).
3. Travel to Lamu Kenya to demonstrate teaching strategies designed to increase academic achievement and discuss educational issues with parents.
4. Letter drive to Kenya government officials encouraging the Kenya Airport Authority to bring electrical power to the only government entity on Manda Island (the school).
5. Establish a mentoring and coaching project based on the National Primary School Exam, which needs to be passed in order to access secondary school.

2. Provide greater access to education to children through the use of technology.
3. Develop an exchange program between Americans and Africans through local
resources from the respective countries.
4. Raise additional money for scholarships for secondary school pupils.
5. Provide sustainable activities to encourage girls to remain in school.
Background Information
Organization
Lamu
Lamu is a Kenyan island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Kenya. There are 14 schools in the region with Manda Primary School as the poorest. There is no electricity on the island. Children walk to school from neighboring villages. Most children work on the family farms for a meager existence. There is a severe shortage of teachers in most schools and they are not paid consistently which adversely affects education quality. Primary classes are large. Classes become smaller as the students become older due to high drop out rates. Boys outnumber girls at the end of primary school.
Project Operational Plan
St. Carries Center initiated its International Project St. Carrie’s Classroom in Lamu, Kenya on June 30, 2011 with a visit to the island to meet with potential project partners there. This trip lasted approximately 20 days with meetings with educators committed to educational services for children.
St. Carries Center shares 4 goals with the United Nations millennium goals
1. Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
2. Achieve Universal Primary Education
3. Promote Gender Equality & Empower Women
4. Create Global Partnerships for Development
The goal is to return to the United States and raise money to assist with scholarships for 8 children , as well as provide reusable personal hygiene products to 14 schools with approximately 3000 students and provide instructional materials to all students. SCCHD recruits teachers in the United States to mentor teachers in Kenya on the best practices in the classroom. International Educators from SCCCD will mentor American teachers who will in turn mentor Kenyan Teachers. English as A Second Language Teachers as well as Math Teachers will be recruited to lend their expertise. This guidance will be provided to teachers via internet.
Three trips per year will be made by the Project manager. The goal is to ensure continuity in the project and build a relationship. Teaching will be videotaped to show the possibilities to other African countries. One trip per year will last from 4 to 8 weeks while the project manager provides direct instruction in English and Math to the students and workshops to the parents.
Sustainability is an important component of the project. Volunteers will create a cloth and panties campaign to provide girls with the necessities to manage menstruation so they can attend school. We will teach them how to make the items as well. Some clothing can be sold on the website to sustain the project. Merchandise can be sold online and at arts and craft fairs in the United States to offset costs. Photos of the locals and scenery can be sold along with T shirts and other memorabilia. Other projects may be developed with local collaboration. Video taping can document the project and be sold to media outlets for income and to raise funds.
Letter writing campaign to encourage corporations in Kenya to sponsor this initiative
Letters will be written to technology companies to provide training in technology. Letters will be written to solicit donations of school supplies. Letters will also be written to government agencies to provide power to the school. Electrical power allows for use of technology. Letters will be written to the Minister of Education to reinstitute the feeding program at Manda Primary School. Electricity will allow for cooking and refrigeration which are necessary for a school feeding program. |
